Leicester Singer Molly Smitten-Downes In Eurovision

A 26-year-old singer from Leicestershire has been chosen to perform her self-written song ‘Children of the Universe’ in Copenhagen on the 10th of May after being choosen by BBC chiefs to represent the UK for the 2014 Eurovision song contest.

Rothley born Singer Molly Smitten-Downes will sing to an audience of potentially 120 million people after BBC chiefs spotted her as part of ‘BBC Introducing’ which helps to promote unsigned talent.

The BBC has ditched its recent strategy of enlisting veteran acts after a disasterous two years in Eurovision, which saw Engelbert Humperdinck open the 57th Contest 2012 in Azerbaijan with a performance of his ballad ‘Love Will Set You Free’ but recieved only 12 points.

Bonny Tyler then failed to impress in 2013 with the song ‘Believe In Me’, where she also failed to impress coming in 19th place with only 23 points.

Guy Freeman, the BBC’s executive producer for Eurovision wrote in a blog: “We took the view that we needed a bespoke, contemporary song, written specifically to suit the conditions of the competition – rather than trying to get lucky with a pre-existing track from an artist.”

Molly said “To represent the United Kingdom in such a huge competition, not only as a singer and performer but as a songwriter is an unbelievable honour. I hope I can do us proud.”

Katie Taylor, the BBC’s head of entertainment, said: “She has the chance to make her mark by flying the flag for the UK and be appreciated by millions of people throughout Europe.”

The singer, from Leicestershire, has been writing and singing songs for over a decade and has supported acts such as Tinie Tempah, Labrinth and Jake Bugg, with her efforts being rewarded by getting a place on the worlds biggest music stage.

Denmark landed this year’s Eurovision after triumphing in 2013 with Emmelie de Forest’s Only Teardrops. It will be broadcast on BBC1 and Radio 2 live.

We will of course be watching Molly very closely over the next few months and suspect that she will make it big wherever she comes in the competition.
