20mph Zone Introduced

A new 20mph zone is being introduced in part of Leicester after more than 90 percent of residents in the area backed the idea.

Humberstone Village is the latest place in the city to get a 20mph zone to help reduce accidents and encourage cycling and walking. A public consultation on the scheme back in April 2014 saw 91 percent of people in favour of such a scheme.

The new scheme will cover much of Humberstone Village, as well as a section of Vicarage Lane which was requested by residents as an add-on to the original 20mph proposals.

In addition, existing school ‘keep clear’ markings around Humberstone Infant and Junior Schools will be made mandatory, meaning enforcement action can be taken against drivers who flout the rules.

The plans have now been formally approved by City Mayor Peter Soulsby. Work will now begin on putting in place the relevant Traffic Regulation Orders, in time for the scheme to come into effect in September 2014.

In total the scheme will cost about £10,000 from the city council’s transport capital programme.

Humberstone Village’s scheme is the latest in an ongoing series of 20mph zones in residential areas across the city.
